Obituary of Germaine Barbarite
Germaine M. Barbarite, 86, of Portland, ME, formerly of New Canaan, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, ME.
Born April 1, 1925 in Saint Marc, Belgium, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Alice Demanet Alexis.
She was educated in Belgium and made her home in New Canaan for 56 years before moving to Maine. She taught French at King Low Heywood Thomas School in Stamford for 25 years and after retiring, continued teaching at the Community Center in New Canaan.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, James Barbarite; her brothers, Jean and Roger Alexis.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Anne Barbarite of Norwalk and Josette M. Barbarite of Portland, ME. and her husband Bert Jongerden; step grandson Kyle Jongerden of South Portland, ME; sister Lily Alexis-Arnoud and brother Maurice Alexis of Belgium, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 29, 2011 at St. Aloysius Church, New Canaan at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan.
The family will receive friends at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St. New Canaan on Thursday, April 28, 2011 from 6-8 PM.
