Obituary of Amy Lange

¬¬Amy K. Lange, 44, of Millington, TN, passed away on November 25, 2013. Ms. Lange was named SCS Teacher of the Year for 2012-13. She was an integral part of the Millington Arts Council and a well-loved art teacher at Millington Central High School in Shelby County, TN where she had taught for nearly a decade. She started her teaching career at Germantown High School in Germantown, TN and recently was an adjunct art education instructor at Memphis College of Art in Memphis, TN. She was a gifted and accomplished photographer, graphic designer, and painter in addition to being a teacher. Amy was an outstanding educator who generously shared her knowledge and expertise with young students, student teachers, and her peers. It was her opinion that most students are not taught to think effectively. Her art project assignments required that the student research his topic from several perspectives and think it through before arriving at a solution. Once those skills are learned they carry over into every aspect of the student’s education and life. Many of her pupils have been accepted at top colleges and universities all over the country; some have received very generous grants and scholarships. Amy founded the Art Honor Society Scholarship fund at Millington Central High School in addition to events such as the annual Silent Auction and art sales at the Millington Farmer’s Market to promote her students' artwork. Because of her guidance and active promotion of her students’ work, their art has been featured on billboards in such places as New York City and at the Memphis International Airport. Amy was as proud as any parent of the accomplishments of her kids. Amy attended the Low Heywood Thomas School in Stamford, CT and graduated from Stamford High School in 1987. She received her BFA in photography at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, and earned a Master’s degree from The University of Memphis where she was pursuing her doctoral in Instructional Design and Technology. She is survived by and greatly missed by her loving family; father Kenneth Lange of Stamford, CT, mother Susan Richards of Evergreen, CO, step-mother Elizabeth Lange of Stamford, CT, step-brother Law Biddle and his wife Christine, sister Holly Lange and her husband Addison Parker, sister Robin Lange, step-sister Silsbee Biddle Philo and her husband Matthew, niece Jillian Philo, and nephew William Philo. A memorial reception will be held at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St. New Canaan, CT. on Saturday, December 21st from 2pm to 5pm with words of remembrance at 3:00PM In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in memory of Amy Lange be sent to: Millington Central High School 8050 West St. Millington, TN 38053 Please add a memo at the bottom of the check that it goes to the Art Honor Society Scholarship in Amy Lange’s memory.
