Obituary of Alice Jones

Alice C. Jones of Norwalk, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 7, 2017. She was a few weeks short of her 94th birthday. Alice Marie Castle was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania. She grew up surrounded by a very large extended family, most living within walking distance from her house. As the oldest grandchild and niece, she was always busy helping someone in the family, especially her many cousins. She was a stellar student and a high school cheerleader, known and loved for her big smile. After graduating from Kingston High School, she went to work for the Kingston Bank. She married John Robert (Bob) Jones, the love of her life, on Thanksgiving Day in 1948. The newlyweds lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Wilmington, Delaware, before settling in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, where they raised two daughters. During this time, Alice took classes at Moravian College. She was an active volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem and coordinated many fund-raisers. She played in various bridge clubs and was always looking for new strategies to improve her game. When her daughters were older, she returned to her banking career. She also acquired her real estate license and worked as a dental assistant. Her dream job was working as a bridal consultant. She loved being a part of such an exciting time in the lives of her customers. After spending over four decades in the Lehigh Valley, Alice relocated to Connecticut so she could be closer to her two grandchildren. She enjoyed being a part of their busy lives—sports, church, play groups, and school. Grandparent's Day at The New Canaan Country Day School was always a special favorite. In her spare time, she participated in various book groups and made a point to read The New York Times every day. Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob and her two brothers, Leo and Robert Castle. She will be much missed by her daughters Karen Hansen of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Pamela Shilling of New Canaan, Connecticut, along with her grandchildren, Allison and John, also of New Canaan. A private memorial service will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to St. Aloysius Parish at 21 Cherry Street New Canaan, Connecticut 06840.
