Obituary of Suzanna Gray
Suzanna Waterman Gray, a resident of New Canaan for 63 years, died Sunday, October 2, 2016, with her family by her side. She was 88 years old.
Mrs. Gray was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 11, 1927, daughter of the late Jeremiah Colwell Waterman and Mary Fager Waterman. Suzanna married the late Howard Keating Gray of Port Washington, New York in 1952 in Larchmont, New York. Their marriage lasted 51 years.
Mrs. Gray was a graduate of Mamaroneck High School and a graduate of Smith College in 1949, with a degree in Latin American Relations. She spent her junior year in Mexico City and continued to speak fluent Spanish throughout her lifetime. Suzanna loved history and was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in Connecticut. She was a past president and longtime member of the New Canaan Garden Club. Additionally, she volunteered at the New Canaan Waveny Care Center. She was associated with The Whitney Shop of New Canaan for a number of years as an interior designer and a curator of the art gallery. Afterwards, she started her own decorating business: Suzanna Gray Interiors. Mrs. Gray was a devout Christian and longtime communicant of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in New Canaan where she was on the Vestry, the Altar Guild, the Flower Guild, the Church Choir and taught Sunday School. And she was a member of the Country Club of New Canaan for almost 60 years where she enjoyed playing golf and tennis. Mrs. Gray traveled extensively throughout Europe, but she mostly enjoyed spending summers with her husband and young family in Nantucket and winters skiing in Vermont.
“She was a fair and kind person and a fun-loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed by all.”
Surrounding her bedside were her son, Whitney W. Gray of New Canaan, and her two daughters Kimberley L. Gray Austin of Terryville, CT and Gwendolyn H. Gray of Stamford, CT, and her granddaughter Lauren Austin of New Britain, CT. She is survived by her sister Judith Hart of West Lebanon, NH and three other grandchildren: Tyler Austin of Arlington, VA and Asa & Victoria Gray of Simpsonville, SC (Whitney’s children, formerly of New Canaan).
In lieu of flowers, all contributions can be sent to St. Marks Church in New Canaan and The Dementia Society of America, c/o Suzanna W. Gray. The burial service and internment will be held privately.
