Obituary of John Farmakis
John “Jack” Farmakis passed away on Saturday, February 20th, 2016. Jack touched many lives through his love of family, friends, sports, travel, work and many community-based activities.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 27, 1931. Upon graduation from Episcopal Academy, Jack attended University of Pennsylvania. He was actively involved in many organizations, including managing and coordinating events for Mask & Wig. He graduated with a business degree in 1953. He then served a brief period of time in the US Army.
Jack met his wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Smith during his college days. They were married at Merion Golf Club in Merion, PA. They raised their three children in both Norwalk and New Canaan, CT. He was very involved in all aspects of their lives and always found a way to balance and prioritize all he did.
He was deeply involved with the Kiwanis Club of New Canaan and the A Better Chance (ABC) program in New Canaan to help support the educational development of young adults. He also actively participated in various tennis and racquet, church, and community-based programs.
Jack started his career in media sales with several leading agriculture publications, including Farm Journal magazine. An entrepreneur at heart, he started J.L. Farmakis, Inc. in 1974 to represent local ag media properties and today, this firm is still one of the leading independent ad sales firms in the US.
Jack loved to travel with Betsy and friends to many destinations around the world. He also enjoyed his part-time residencies in Sunapee, NH, Naples, FL and Sea Island, GA. He so enjoyed the outdoors with family and friends and the many activities that it brought him, including racquet sports, kayaking, boating, building sand castles, camping, hiking, and skiing. He remained an avid and loyal Jets fan throughout his life that his shared by multi-generations in his family.
He is survived by his three children, John L Farmakis, Jr, Deborah L Buckley and William D Farmakis, and their families and 7 grandchildren.
The memorial service for Jack will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, CT on Friday, March 11th at 3pm.
