New Canaan, CT—July 8, 2013---Marcia (Dembow) Strousse died today. She was born in 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Fanny (Abrams) and Harry Dembow, a family involved in the pioneering stages of producing, distributing, and exhibiting motion pictures. A common thread in Marcia’s life was her writing. She edited her high school and college newspapers and yearbooks. When she was a senior at Bryn Mawr College, she won the Vogue Magazine Prix de Paris writing contest for a theater review of Tallulah Bankhead’s performance in “The Little Foxes.” The prize led to her first job, after graduation in 1947, as Assistant to the Fashion Editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was later a Feature Reporter and wrote for The Sunday Magazine. Under three different bylines, she learned the news business from what was then considered to be “women’s pages”—fashion, beauty, food, interior decorating, and even advice to the lovelorn. Next came marriage to David Strousse, and then a move to Stamford, CT in 1955, where as a full-time creative mother, they raised three children in both Stamford and East Brewster, MA for Cape Cod summers. After her marriage ended, she revamped her career when she joined Golf Digest Magazine in 1968 as Assistant Promotion Manager two weeks after Golf Digest was purchased by The New York Times Company. She was subsequently named Vice President (one of the first NYT female vice presidents) of Marketing and Communications for the entire NYT magazine group. Upon her retirement in 1992, she started her own successful event/marketing company, Current Events. Marcia was active in the community, serving on the Board of Ferguson Library in Stamford, CT, and volunteering at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Southfield Neighborhood Village, and leading a Girl Scout troop. Her retirement days were busy with numerous book clubs, exercise classes, volunteering at AmeriCares, the New Canaan Thrift Shop, and the Fairfield Alumnae of Bryn Mawr College, most recently serving on the annual Alumnae Seminar Committee. She is survived by her three children, Cynthia Strousse of Boston, MA; Tracy Strousse of Burbank, CA, and David Strousse of Hartland, VT as well as Victoria, her daughter-in-law and her two beloved granddaughters: Rose Simone and Kate Caroline. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Bornstein of Philadelphia, PA, and her nephews, Barry Bornstein of Philadelphia and Steve Bornstein of Venice, CA. While Marcia always appreciated a well-planned event, she requested a private family memorial.
