Eric was special! His scoring talents were extraordinary on NYYC RC. But, he got special enjoyment from setting marks. Miss you, buddy!

I got to know Eric during his time at Bank of America where he ran our Leveraged Finance Group. I was in syndications and worked, often, with Eric and his team during the syndication of the leveraged Finance transactions they had originated. Eric was an extraordinary leader with exacting standards and incredible loyalty to his colleagues. I learned a great deal from working with Eric and his team of highly motivate, talented individuals. After Eric left Bank of America, I lost touch with him but remained in touch with several of his teammates. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I attended his Memorial Service and am so glad I got the opportunity to meet with his daughters and their husbands. I had not realized how devoted Eric was to sailing. I was also active on the Race Committee of the St. Francis Yacht Club and can only imagine what a masterful committeeman he was at the New York Yacht Club. Eric played such a meaningful role in the lives of the young bankers who had the privilege of serving under him. He was a mentor to us all, a consummate gentlemen, and an incredibly loyal friend and family man. Many thanks, Eric, for the wonderful memories.

Cheryle, Caroline and Cynthia,
Reading Eric's tribute brought to life the full depth and breadth of Eric's life on earth with all the many seasons he experienced. He shared the love of the sea, the exhilaration of Naval jets and that "over the top" risk taking in life with my late husband, Randy. He passed into heaven in February of 2014. No wonder they were great pals over the many decades. Eric and Randy were both brilliant men that always challenged themselves. Their sense of humor and sarcasm always kept things lively. Cheryle, I love that we were able to spend time together as couples in New York City and in Newport, RI with Eric sharing the beautiful New York Yacht Club with us. I had always wished we didn't live so darn far from each other. I sincerely appreciate you reaching out to me letting me know of Eric's struggle with ALS and his passing. Cheryle, I would love to reconnect with you when the time is right. Certainly if you ever have a chance to come to Texas, let me know. I have been in Dallas for the past 9 years. Sending y'all love, God's comfort and the scrapbook of so many happy memories of Eric. Carol Aldridge

My name is Janet Stonington. I am Eric's first cousin. My dad and Eric's mom were brother and sister. One thing I remember about Betty was that she could really make my dad laugh. I know that Eric had that same sense of humor. My family grew up in Denver, Colorado and we made trips to the Darien to visit our grandparents and hang with our many cousins who lived in the area. I remember thinking that Eric and Greg were so cool. Eric was the same age as my brother Dave who is 10 years older than me.
Even though I was the little kid, Eric and Greg were still really nice to me. And I remember my sister had a big crush on Eric. My trips to Darien meant a lot to me. Eric Richards and his smiling good nature is something I will never forget.

Cheryle:
Just learned of Eric's passing in the NYYC magazine and am deeply saddened at the loss of a terrific guy and good friend.
Knowing how much he enjoyed his RC duty, and the passion with which he executed every task, I am particularly proud to have facilitated his joining the team so many years ago.
His warmth, good humor and high standards will be sorely missed.

We are so sad to hear of dear Eric’s passing. We loved you both! You were our neighbors for years in New Canaan and we will
Miss Eric’s wonderful smiles and sense of humor! Remember you coming to our book signing and support and love thru the years. And our days partying at Roton Point together on the Sound.
In Fla now but will be home by March and please alert us for memorial service. He was indeed one of Jack’s best friends.
Dear Eric and Cheryl, we love you and will
Miss him!!

I’ve known Eric for 41 years. He was my mentor.
We did not see each other often. However, many, many one hour plus phone calls and a few periodic visits with Eric and Cheryle at their home in New Canaan resulted in a lifetime friendship between us.
In addition to discussing everything from business to politics to many other topics, I was blessed to hear about Cheryle and also about the life journeys of Caroline and Cynthia, very important sparkles in his eye. And also Vivienne, that incredible granddaughter he loved to talk about.
And we even discussed Greg, Eric’s smarter brother. (Those are Eric’s words, not mine).
I initially knew Eric as a very serious businessman. But over the years I was also able to enjoy his dry but great humor. And I was able to appreciate his commitment and dedication to his family. He loved every one of you so dearly. I know. I heard it in his voice and descriptions on many calls.
Over the years, I respected Eric for being one of the brightest kids on the block, but also for being a kind individual. Although I was initially just an assigned mentee at the bank (Chase) for Eric, he invested time in me. He taught me many things and above all, he became my beloved friend.
My life journey has been blessed by Eric Richards.
May you rest in eternal peace my dear friend.
Jim

Eric - Remember the day you snagged the Newport cable after an exhausting day on the water and you were really ticked but too tired to do anything about it? AJ and I went out to untangle the mess without any luck. We gave you a lot of grief and you laughed and gave it right back to us. I went out with you twice and learned a lot both times. Thank you. You should know that you were valued as a fellow RC member, and I am proud to have known you. Bravo Zulu. Ellen Sykes

I remember that day vividly, Ellen. It is among many other fond memories of Eric on and near the water and the lessons he taught new RC. I thought of him this past summer while driving Gimcrack to station in the morning. By Eric's standard, the mark boats should fall in behind/on the signal boat's quarters in the wake until abeam of Castle Hill. On that day and in my head today, the absence of the mark boats was like a missing man formation. Fair winds, Eric. AJ Evans
