Dear Steve,
Truly sorry for the loss of your wonderful wife, Eleanor.
As you know Eleanor and I played Doubles Squash together and over the many games we played and time we spent chatting, I became very fond of Eleanor's company and very much valued her advice and insight.
I only found our about Eleanor's passing yesterday and it really hit me hard as Eleanor was a lovely and gentle person who always had a smile to share.
I will miss Eleanor as I am sure everyone whose lives she lit up with her smile will too.

Dear Steve and Monroe children:
Jason captures it nicely. We only knew Eleanor on the squash court at The University Club, but it was a joy playing with her. Sports like squash require more than athletic ability - they also reveal character. Eleanor was competitive but gracious, fun and fair, a totally nice person.
This stunning news is so saddening. She was so young, so vibrant, so interesting, so nice. I wish we had known her better.

Dear Steve and the Monroe children, it was with shock and sadness that I happened yesterday to see Eleanor's name on the In Memoriam page on the UClub website. I am so sorry for your loss. The Obituary I have just found on line is filled with love and pride, but it also explains how Eleanor became such a fast and agile doubles squash player -- and so competitive. All that riding, field hockey, LAX. Thanks to our club, I got to know the vivacious, charming Eleanor. May you all be comforted by happy memories.

This beautiful obituary shows how modest Eleanor was about her many, many accomplishments. I knew she was a great rackets player, but I knew nothing about her sports awards and her starting Georgetown Women's Lacrosse. She was an entrepreneur, but I knew nothing of the awards and citations she won. She made raising 4 kids and running her own business look effortless, and her community service through hiring countless young people and starting Two Bookends, was little known beyond her circle. Losing Eleanor is a huge, huge loss to everyone who knew her, and especially her wonderful family, of whom she was so proud.
