Gertrude Doyle SALERNO
Gertrude Doyle Salerno, known as “Geret”, of Wilton, CT, formerly of New Canaan died peacefully January 5, 2012, at home. She was 88.
She was born December 27, 1923, in Philadelphia, PA, to Marie Lawler Doyle and John Thomas Doyle. She attended Little Flower High School in Philadelphia. Geret worked for the Quartermaster in Philadelphia before moving to NY where she became a buyer for Helena Rubenstein Cosmetics. Geret met her husband, Jim, at a church bazaar in Port Washington, NY. After her marriage, Geret lived in Louisville, KY, Port Washington, NY, and New Canaan, CT before retiring to Lexington, VA. Geret moved back to New Canaan in 2009 before moving to Wilton after her husband’s death in 2010.
Geret enjoyed entertaining, and cooking for, a crowd and, most of all, loved all things related to her family. She was an active volunteer in the Catholic Church, teaching religious education, organizing church functions and acting as an usher. Before moving back to Connecticut, she enjoyed being an active volunteer at the Habitat ReStore in Lexington. Geret was predeceased by her husband of almost 55 years, James Joseph Salerno, Jr. as well as 3 sisters Marie Doyle, Jane Doyle Donofry , Madelyn Doyle Cramer, and 2 brothers, Fr. John T. Doyle, OSFS and Fr. Steven C. Doyle, OFM. She is survived by four children, Mariclair Bailey of Ocean Springs, MS, Lisa Carlin of New London, NH, James Salerno of Concord, CA, and Julie Taylor of New Canaan; 11 grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Matthew Zittleman, Alexa, Savannah, Rive and Tessa Carlin, Callie, Mary Lena, Felicity and Pippa Taylor; and one great-granddaughter Angelena Zittleman; a sister, Margaret Doyle Bouffard of Williamsburg, VA, 2 brothers, James Doyle of MD and Joseph S. Doyle of Sunapee, NH and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in New Canaan. Donations in her memory may be made to Habitat ReStore located at 30 East Preston St., Lexington, VA 24450.
