Obituary of Ursula Guill

Ursula Magliolo Guill, age 89, a 49-year resident of New Canaan, died Tuesday morning December 2, 2008 at her home surrounded by family. Born July 22, 1919 in Galveston, TX, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary DiMare Magliolo, and the wife of the late A. W. Guill. After earning her degree in Zoology and Chemistry from the University of Texas in 1941, she taught Science at Ball High School in Galveston. She became a medical technician in the blood bank at the UT Medical Branch, Galveston. Married February 10, 1945, Ursula and A. W. lived in Texas, England, Scotland, and finally New Canaan with their five children. Her extensive volunteering included the Red Cross Bloodmobile, the New Canaan Sewing Group, Meals on Wheels, the Republican Club, New Canaan School System PTA, and the American Association of University Women Scholarship Committee. She enjoyed her work at Norwalk Hospital for many years as a member of the Volunteer Board, Historian, Chairman of Medicare Information Services, and as a Counselor in Health Care in the Connecticut Agency on Aging Program. Always an advocate for the youth of New Canaan, she served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA in the late 60’s, and was instrumental in implementing a comprehensive sex education program for the New Canaan public schools. She was a lifelong Girl Scout and a Troop Leader in the Southwestern Connecticut Girl Scout Council. Ursula was a member of the Garden Club of New Canaan, and along with gardening, she was an avid tennis, Bridge, Tai Chi and mahjongg player. Survivors include her five children - three sons, Dennis J. Guill and his wife Patty of Richardson, TX; J. Talley Guill and his wife Joyceann of Bedford, NH; Jeffery R. Guill of New Canaan; and two daughters, Maryann Guill Couch, MD, and her husband James B. Couch, MD, of Belle Meade, NJ; Ninabeth Guill Sowell and her husband M. Judson Sowell of Charlotte, NC, her seven grandchildren: Jarret Guill; Lee Guill; Patrick-Joseph Guill; John Couch; Katherine Couch; Laura Couch; and Benjamin Sowell, and her sister, Ellen M. Shindler of Houston, TX She was pre-deceased by her brother, Joseph Magliolo Jr. of Houston, TX A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday December 6, 2008 at 12:00 Noon at St Aloysius Church, Cherry Street, New Canaan, CT with interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan on Friday evening from 4 to 7 pm and on Saturday morning from 10 to 11:30 am.
