Obituary of Maria Storey
María del Pilar Tapia Storey, 82, a resident of New Canaan for over 30 years, passed away on November 18, 2008 at Stamford Hospital. She was born on March 3, 1926 to Gabriel and América Tapia Morales in Villa Guerrero, Valley of Toluca, Mexico. She was a school teacher in Mexico City. Mrs. Storey was the wife of the late Reed K. Storey, a university professor and accountant.
María and Reed Storey lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, Berkeley, California, and Seattle, Washington; and then they moved eastward, first to Upper Montclair, New Jersey and eventually to New Canaan, Connecticut. María came quickly to enjoy life on the East Coast, particularly living in suburban New York and taking advantage of its cultural richness. She had worked hard to raise the three children in the various places the family lived, and she was active in local community events in Upper Montclair, where the children spent most of their childhood. In 1975, the Storey family moved to New Canaan when Reed joined the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) technical staff. María loved New England, especially in the fall, and after Reed Storey's passing in 1999, she stayed, along with one of her daughters, in New Canaan, where she loved to read history and biography, and where she continued to enjoy the woods and wildlife outside her home.
Mrs. Storey is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Storey of New Canaan; her daughter, Rebecca Storey, and son-in-law Randolph J. Widmer, of Houston, TX; and her son, Glenn Reed Storey, daughter-in-law, Andrea Lucia Storey, and her two granddaughters, Isabel and Rebecca Storey, all of Iowa City, IA.
