I was so surprised and saddened when hearing that Dr. Downing passed away. He was a terrific doctor who always listened to patient's concerns and wishes -- showing a strong desire to jointly work with the patient to determine the most appropriate course of action. He will certainly be missed by all of those fortunate enough to have been treated by him.

Dear Karen and family, You would not know me, but my favorite doctor was John Downing. I was shocked to read his obituary late in the day on Saturday, and wished I could be present at the wake and mass.If you ever have a moment, could you tell me what kind of cancer he battled? Dr. Downing knew my medical history without looking at a chart and sometimes to my surprise remembered comments I had made a year ago! And he was never quick to suggest surgery. He had me try all kinds of exercises before he recommended surgery for my torn rotator cuff. Dr. Downing operated on my shoulder very successfully, and I had little pain, though I understand it was unusually difficult that time. The anaesthetic didn't work too well on me in the beginning! My husband said he came out of the operating room with a face as white as a sheet! He was a very dedicated doctor. We liked to call him "Superman"behind his back! He was so able-- and good looking to boot! What a loss for his patients. To say nothing of his family--he was so young. I can only hope you heard many stories like mine at the wake. and I hope your memories of him will comfort you. With love, Dianne Daddona

Dear Karen and family,
I was a classmate of John's at NYU and am sorry I could not travel to New Canaan this weekend for the funeral. I had not seen John in all these years, but I clearly remember his positive, confident, yet easygoing manner, which I am sure made him a wonderful caregiver and family man. I also am reminded of great weekend trip we took to Yosemite the summer he was in a lab at Stanford and I at UCSF ('81 I believe). It remains my only trip to that amazing place. My heartfelt condolences on your tragic loss. Yours, David

Dear Karen,Jack,Will, and Nick: My cousin Johnny and I spent the better part of a week traveling across the country on his way to Palo Alto, CA. We talked a great deal and also had hours of silence too. We broke down in that 1972 VW Scirroco in Kearny Nebraska. In a way I had won a unique lottery by being able to drive a stick shift and was volunteered to accompany John on his drive to Stamford University. I will always remember John on that trip, San Francisco, on the links at Cherry Hill and as the "horizontal kid" on the couch on Linden Avenue reading Hardy Boys mysteries where he grew into our smart, tall, and handsome cousin whom we all admired. He will be missed dearly and we all feel your loss. Love, Tom, Dianne, Michael and Leigh Giangreco
