Herbert Richard Maria Seltzer, age 89, died suddenly from a tragic accident with injuries sustained from a fall on Monday, December 30th. He is survived by his wife, Adeline Marie Seltzer and daughters, Nadine Seltzer of New Canaan and Carole Anne Collins, son-in-law William J. Collins and granddaughter Elizabeth Anne Collins of York, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by a brother Fred Seltzer who lives in Bogota, Colombia with his wife Dora and two sisters, Natalie Hoffman and Sandra Shannon both living in Baltimore, Maryland along with numerous nieces and nephews in the US and abroad. Richard was born on February 7, 1925 in Philadelphia, the eldest child of the late Rose Rolan and Harry Louis Seltzer. Richard met his wife, Adeline Marie Wilwers, while campaigning through Luxembourg during World War 2 as a sergeant in the Engineer Corp., 10th Armored Division, 3rd Army of General George Patton who liberated Luxembourg from the Nazis. Adeline joined her husband in Germany at war's end as general court's martial interpreter for the First Infantry Division while Richard was assigned to post war occupation duties. Adeline emigrated to the US as a "war bride" with Richard on the "Blanche Sigman" a US army ship used to transport military personnel to the Brooklyn Navy Yard where the) entered the US in November 1947. Richard graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Engineering and MS in engineering and Business Management. He also attended Leeds University in England and the University of Pennsylvania. He developed three patent applications while a design engineer with RCA. After joining ITT in 1974, he was appointed VP for domestic communications for satellites and microwave projects. He retired from Lockheed Electronics in 1989. After moving to New Canaan in 1979, he became a board member of the New Canaan Society of the Arts, Chairman of the Utilities Commission which he served for 25 years. He also served as board member of the Yale School of Medicine Eye Center and an advisory board member to the Aquarion Water Company. He was also a church acolyte at St. Aloysius Parish and a Cooperator in Opus Dei. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday January 6, 2014 at 11: 00 AM at St. Aloysius Church, Cherry Street, New Canaan with interment to follow in St Johns Cemetery, Norwalk. The family will receive friends at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan on Sunday January 5, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
