Obituary of Richard Gerweck
Richard A. Gerweck, 80, of New Canaan, died Wednesday, October 01, 2008 at Norwalk Hospital.
Born April 8, 1928, in East Orange, NJ, he was the son of the late Richard A. & Louise Yunker Gerweck, Sr.
He was a graduate of Chatham, NJ High School and Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, where he lettered in lacrosse, a sport he continued to officiate for many years. Following college, he served four years in the Army in the Korean conflict and another 24 in the Army Reserves, retiring in 1969 with the rank of Colonel. A professional in the logistics and handling industry, he held executive positions at Johnson & Johnson, McGraw Hill, Clairol/Bristol Myers and Cambridge University Press, as well as his own logistics and consulting firm. Following his retirement, he volunteered at the New Canaan Food Bank and developed a deep interest in the plight of the American Indians, especially the Sioux/Lakota in South Dakota
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Ann Graybach Gerweck of New Canaan, his sister, Dorothy G. Moeri of Sarasota, FL, .two sons, James R. Gerweck of Norwalk and Thomas P. Gerweck of Longmeadow, MA, and four grandsons, Samuel, Zachary, Benjamin and Luke.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private.
