Obituary of Sara Perkins
Sara Frost Perkins, 82, longtime resident, “ I’ve-Been-Moved” homemaker
Sara Frost Perkins, known by all as Sally, passed away in her home in New Canaan, on July 27th, 2011 after a short bout with cancer. Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan on tax day, April 15th, 1929, Sally was the eldest daughter of Crawford and Marylou Frost of Detroit, Michigan. She has one sister, Judith Anne VanAlen who is currently living in Stuart, Florida. She attended Grosse Pointe Country Day School and then went on to Bradford Junior College before graduating from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a BA degree in Art History.
It was at the University of Michigan where she met and then married Maurice Clark Perkins, Jr of Saginaw, MI. Moe and Sally were married on September 15th, 1952 just after Moe joined IBM. They enjoyed 40 adventurous “I’ve-Been-Moved” years together as an IBM couple beginning in Lima, OH, Indianapolis, IN, Bethesda, MD, Dayton, OH, Bethesda, MD and Short Hills, NJ, before settling down in1968 in New Canaan, CT in a house created by Sally on Ponus Ridge Road. It was while living on Ponus and raising their three children, that Sally enjoyed her “15 minutes of fame” by posing for magazine ads as an Revlon Eterna 27 model for her best friend and creative director of Revlon, David Leddick. Sally often remarked, “when I die, please make sure the headline reads…………Former Revlon Model Succumbs!”
Quick-witted with a devilish sense of humor, Sally began her professional career as a homemaker and volunteer moving every two years as IBM dictated. She embraced each town that she and Moe were transferred to with a joyful spirit, relying on her wits and imagination. Whether it was starting a pot-luck club in Indianapolis or joining the Junior League and using her Art History degree to give weekly tours to inner city children at the National Art Gallery in Washington, DC, Sally had a true zest for life. It was in New Canaan that she started Corporate Art Services Inc. with her partner, Ann Viner and spent several years advising and buying works of art for New York-based companies such as NW Ayer and Russell Reynolds.
Her passions ran the gamut from painting, gardening and traveling to spending time with her children and creating Imaginative tales for her grandchildren.
Sally Perkins is survived by two daughters, Polly Perkins Johnson and her husband, Eads Johnson, Sara Perkins Marshall and her husband John Marshall, a son, Maurice Clark Perkins III and his wife, Debbie Perkins as well as four grandchildren: Sara and Charles Perkins, Jack and Page Marshall and sister Judith Ann VanAlen. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark’s Church on Wednesday, September 7th at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate her life with friends and family.
