Obituary of Catherine Brinckerhoff
Catherine Ticknor Brinckerhoff, who lived all of her adult life in New Canaan, died Thursday, July 14, at the White Oak Shade Road home where she had lived for 56 years. She was 92 years old and had been in declining health.
Mrs. Brinckerhoff, a homemaker, was born in Plainfield, NJ, the daughter of Arthur and Katherine Ticknor. The family moved to West Norwalk in the 1940s, and in the early 1950s Mrs. Brinckerhoff and her husband, Richard, moved to an apartment on Seminary Street in New Canaan and later, to Kimberly Place.
During World War II, Mrs. Brinckerhoff volunteered as a nurse’s aide. Later, she volunteered in cub scouting, at Norwalk Hospital, and at Waveny Care Center. Throughout her life, she participated in civic activities and was well-known as “Kitty” in the community.
In addition to raising a family, she enjoyed gardening, genealogy, bridge, paddle tennis and a succession of well-loved cats and dogs over the years.
Mrs. Brinckerhoff graduated from Finch College, majoring in costume design. By chance, Tricia Nixon was also a Finch graduate, and in the late 1960s she hosted a tea party at the White House that Mrs. Brinckerhoff attended. The party merited a few paragraphs in national newspapers after Abby Hoffman, the sixties political activist, tried to crash the all-female event with Grace Slick, lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane, who had also attended Finch.
Mrs. Brinckerhoff was the widow of Richard Brinckerhoff, who died in 2004 and had been a lawyer and multi-term state representative from New Canaan. The Brinckerhoffs were members of New Canaan Country Club for many years and frequently entertained friends and neighbors at their home.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Brinckerhoff of Haddam, CT and Loring Brinckerhoff of Cambridge, MA; a daughter, Suzi Jolicoeur of Norwalk, and one grandchild, Robin Brinckerhoff of San Francisco. Another daughter, Holly, died while a toddler.
Arrangements are being handled by Hoyt Funeral Home. Following a private graveside service, a memorial gathering will be held at a time and place to be announced.
