Obituary of Doris Peck
Dorie Sturtevant Peck, age 81, a longtime New Canaan resident, died Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at her home, with her loving family by her side. Born in Norwalk, CT February 20, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Beatrice Molby Sturtevant. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Jean Sturtevant Bugbee.
Dorie was a graduate of Gould Academy in Bethel, ME and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Middlebury College, VT. She remained active in her college sorority, Pi Beta Phi, throughout her life.
She was a lay reader and substitute teacher and, in her fifties, embarked on a new career as a travel agent, working most recently with Travel Exchange of Greenwich, CT. She traveled extensively throughout the world, including trips to China, Thailand, Russia, Africa and throughout Europe.
She had a giving spirit and her volunteer activities included the League of Women Voters, parent teacher organizations, Manna House Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels of Stamford, A Better Chance (ABC), Americares’ Christmas in April, the New Canaan Art Show and Middlebury College.
She was an enthusiastic skier enjoying trips with friends, the Over the Hill gang, and her family. She enjoyed entertaining, gourmet cooking, music, theater and the arts. She was a former member of the New Canaan quilting and sewing groups, and a member of the Encore movie discussion group.
Dorie was an active member of the New Canaan Congregational Church, an original member of their Sunday night book discussion group and participant in the morning bible studies.
Dorie is survived by her two daughters, Julie Harvey and her husband Lincoln of Cromwell, CT, and Jennifer Orluck and her two children, Dylan and Jessica, of Chittenden, VT. She was a beloved aunt to the Bugbee, Truesdell, Hurley and Straiton families.
She touched many lives in a positive way as evidenced by the outpouring of love and support during her final months.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Congregational Church of New Canaan, 2 Park Street, New Canaan, CT at a date and time to be announced. A private interment will take place in the memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the New Canaan Congregational Church or Doctors Without Borders
