Alice Ruth Moeller Englund entered the church triumphant on Sunday April 17, 2011 at the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. She was 88 and the wife of Sven W. Englund. Alice was born in Oneida, New York on July 23, 1922 to Enrnest and Alice Jane Moeller. She spent her early childhood in Brooklyn, New York and later moved with her parents to Baldwin, Long Island where her father had purchased a delicatessen store. On her father’s death in 1946 her mother moved back to their home in Brooklyn. Her parents, her sister Gladys Drumm, her brother Paul Moeller, and her Uncle Fred and Aunt Aura Green predeceased her. Alice graduated from Russell Sage College in 1943, taught school in New York State, received her master’s degree in Foods and Nutrition from Columbia Teachers College in 1947 and was on the faculty of Ball State College in Muncie, Indiana. She married Sven William Englund on September 2, 1950 at the Parkville Congregational Church in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Allen the minister had baptized Alice as an infant. Alice and Sven lived for several years in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they attended Knox Presbyterian Church, moved to Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and finally moved to New Canaan in 1958. They have two children; Laura married Fred Worstell of Basking Ridge, NJ, with two children, Carolyn and Matthew. Sven married to Rita Szanto of New Canaan with two children, Kristen and Sven. Alice took classes at the Silvermine School of Art in pencil sketching and watercolor, and was also a potter with her own wheel and kiln. For many years Alice was active in the Embroiders Guild of America where she taught several correspondence courses. During the Clinton presidency, with other members of the Embroiders Guild they embroidered decorations for the Christmas tree in the Blue Room of the White House. Alice and her husband, Sven had the opportunity to visit the White House to see the tree. Alice was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and active in the Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter of the DAR in New Canaan, a member of the New Canaan Women’s Club and a member of the United Methodist Church of New Canaan where she was part of the Children’s Service Circle. Alice was a volunteer for many years at the New Canaan Nature Center and also a volunteer for ARC in Norwalk. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, 165 South Avenue on Saturday, April 23 at 11 AM.
