Obituary of Barbara Morrisson

Barbara Monroe Morrisson died on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at age 90 in the Sherwood Oaks continuing care retirement community in Cranberry Township, PA. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 24, 1920, the daughter of the late Brig. Gen. Hammond McDougal Monroe and Helen McMillan Monroe, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Stone Morrisson, in 1971. She is survived by her son James M. Morrisson and wife Kim of Valley Forge, PA, and daughter Susan Morrisson Petrie and husband Richard of Murrysville, PA; grandchildren Kathryn M. Petrie, Jonathan R. Petrie, and Robert G. Morrisson; her sister Martha Monroe Henderson and husband Eugene of Arlington, VA; and 14 nieces and nephews. An Army daughter, Barbara grew up living on numerous Army posts all across the country. She was patriotic and proud of her military family members. Married life found Barbara and her husband, Bob, living in Cape May, NJ, Boston, Seattle, Palo Alto, CA, and Falls Church, VA before settling in New Canaan, CT, where Barbara resided for 44 years before moving to western Pennsylvania in 2003. Active in the New Canaan community, Barbara served for many years as directress of the Altar Guild of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the board of the Visiting Nurses Association, a Senior Troop Girl Scout leader, and a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. After moving to Pennsylvania she became a faithful member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh. An accomplished singer and lover of opera, music was the highlight of her life. She continued to play piano until six weeks before her death. A memorial service will take place in St. Mark’s Church, New Canaan, Connecticut, on Saturday, March 19, at 10:00 am, with interment beside her husband in Lakeview Cemetery. The family offers their sincerest thanks to the staff at Sherwood Oaks for their loving care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church or Sherwood Oaks, 100 Norman Dr, Cranberry Twp, PA 16066.
