Barbara Batterson Dutlinger Chrostowski of Ridgefield, a native of New Canaan, died Sunday, March 6, at Wilton Meadows with her family at her bedside. Mrs. Chrostowski, a retired accountant, was 73 years old and her death was attributed to cancer. She was born in New Canaan on September 27, 1937, daughter of the late George H. Batterson and the late Edna Dixon Batterson, and had lived in Wilton and Norwalk for many years before moving to Ridgefield a decade ago. After graduation in 1955 from New Canaan High School, where she was a National Honor Society student, class secretary and a cheerleader, she obtained a degree from Norwalk Community College and later took advanced studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. Mrs. Chrostowski began her career with the public accounting firm of the late Louis Squitieri in New Canaan and later became office manager at the Keats Publishing Company, also in New Canaan. Last year, she retired after more than 20 years in the accounting department of Hawthorne, Ackerley and Dorrance, a New Canaan law firm. A woman of boundless energy, she raised her two children while also holding a full-time job and pursuing her college studies. She also was an enthusiastic dancer with a love for music ranging from Mozart to Motown and she was an avid reader, gardener and bird-watcher. Mrs. Chrostowski is survived by her husband, Ed Chrostowski, retired editor of the New Canaan Advertiser; a son, Layne Dutlinger of Torrington; a daughter, Alison Dutlinger-Picci, and her husband, Mark, of Norwalk; a step-daughter, Dr. Amy C. Tocco of Sharon; two sisters, Beverly Titus Clancy and her husband, Salvador, of Norwalk and Margaret (Peggy) Poole and her husband, Albert, of Hudson, Fla., and two brothers, George Batterson and his wife, Carolyn, of Roswell, Ga., and Robert Batterson of Norwalk. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Travis and Justis Picci of Norwalk; Danielle Beyus of Jacksonville, N.C., Leanne and Layne Dutlinger, 2nd, of Harwinton; and Melissa Gruner of Beacon Falls and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, March 11, at St. Aloysius R.C. Church, Cherry Street, New Canaan, and interment in Lakeview Cemetery will be private.
