Obituary of Robert Conner
Robert M. Conner, 82, a long time resident of New Canaan, died Sunday, March 06, 2011 at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan.
Born August 15, 1928 in Stoneham, MA, he was the son of the late Otis J. & Hannah Mortensen Conner.
Robert Conner graduated from Mount Hermon Prepatory School School in 1946, then Colgate University in 1950. After graduation Mr. Conner volunteered for the World YMCA in France and Germany assisting displaced persons from Baltic Countries. Mr. Conner was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Army Security Agency. He was awarded a Commendation Ribbon for meritorious service. After completing his tour he began his business career with the Amstar Corporation, now called the Domino Sugar Corporation. Mr. Conner's career at domino Sugar Corporation lasted 35 years and he retired as General Manager of Raw Sugar Operations. In his retirement Mr. Conner has been very active in the New Canaan community. He was a member of the Exchange Club, the Senior Men's Club, and the Poinsettia Club of New Canaan. Mr. Conner also served on the New Canaan Board of finance for 10 years. Mr. Conner was an avid traveler. He enjoyed travel with his family, and later with friends during his retirement.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jan T. Conner of New Canaan, two daughters, Deborah A. Conner and her husband Stephen Power of Lusaka, Zambia and Susan L. Conner of Bronxville, NY, his son, Richard T. Conner of New Canaan, his brother, Donald Conner and his wife Janet. Four grandchildren, Emma, Maxwell, Samuel and Daniel also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the Congregational Church in New Canaan at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
