Obituary of John Powers

New Canaan and Naples, FL - John F. Powers, 80, died peacefully on February 13, 2011 surrounded by his family at the Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Center in Greenwich of complications of Alzheimer's Disease. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Eleanor; his children Martha; Betsy and Tom Glavin and children Kerry, Jake and Paul, of Brighton, NY; Julie and Vince DeMarco and children Peter, Tim, Tess, Jack and Luke, of Fairfield; Jed and Chris Powers and chlidren Jay and Tommy, of New Canaan; and Katy and Dean Young and children Megan and Charlie, of Norwalk. He is also survived by his sister, Marie and her husband, Joseph Terry; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, George Powers of Arlington, MA. Born and raised in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of John and Irene Powers. After graduating from Cambridge Ringe High School, John served in the Army. He earned his BA and MBA at Boston College. John also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. John joined Arthur Anderson Consulting and became a CPA. One of his proudest achievements was his role in co-founding Prime Computer, Inc. He retired from Barnes Engineering in Stamford, CT. John loved to travel and took great pleasure in planning international adventures and touring the world. A man with a huge heart and a quiet, gentle presence, John made those he met feel important and respected. He was a longtime member of St, Aloysius Church and the Lake Club in New Canaan, and Countryside Golf and Country Club and St. Ann's Church in Naples, FL. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 18th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan. A Mass celebrating John's life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 19th at St. Aloysius Church, 21 Cherry Street, New Canaan.
