Andrea Fernandez-Acevedo

Obituary of Andrea Fernandez-Acevedo

Andrea Fernandez-Acevedo, 34, died on January 7, 2011, just steps away from her home in South Salem, NY. She was struck by a snow plough while walking her dog, Millie, who was also killed. Ms. Acevedo and her husband, Maximiliano Rodrigues, were expecting their first child (a boy) in April. Ms. Acevedo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 3, 1976, the daughter of Raul Fernandez-Acevedo and Nora Rosa Gutierrez. Ms. Acevedo was educated in Argentina, and moved to the United States in 1998, at the age of 21. While visiting relatives in Connecticut, she met Mr. Rodrigues, and the couple became inseparable partners ever thereafter. They married in 2005, and lived in New Canaan, CT, until earlier this year, when they moved to South Salem, NY. Friends and family of Ms. Acevedo are stunned by her death. She was an exceptionally beautiful young woman, whose beauty reflected the kindness, warmth and unassuming elegance and purity of her spirit. Ms. Acevedo had a boundless love for children, and she in turn was loved by them. She was an unabashed lover of animals, and a tireless protector of things of all things small and in need of love and protection. There are many a creature, from injured ducklings and hawks to wayward hedgehogs and lizards that received and prospered from her love and caring attention. She was immensely creative and had a fine appreciation for beauty, which is reflected in her artwork, photography, and countless crafts, which were jealously guarded and appreciated by all who received them. She also possessed a child-like innocence and sense of wander, which was embodied in an email that she sent to her husband just hours before her death. While warning him to come home early to avoid the heavy snow, she included a photo of the snow-covered trees just outside their home, and commented how beautiful it was outside. And it was. Ms. Acevedo was passionate about tennis. She and her husband took up the game several years ago, and spent much of their leisure time playing tennis at the New Canaan Racquet Club, where they met a small circle of other tennis-lovers who became among their dearest of friends. They also travelled to various tournaments and tennis venues around the world, and were looking forward to attending the Australian Open next year. While Ms. Acevedo was normally quite quiet and reserved, she showed no hesitation in hounding the top tennis greats of their world for their signatures and photographs, who, when pressed, gladly obliged. Ms. Acevedo is survived by her husband, her father, her sister, Gisela Fernandez-Acevedo, of Argentina, several nieces and nephews, and several other relatives, many of whom have come from around the world to pay their respects and say goodbye to Ms. Acevedo. After attending a funeral service just two weeks before her own death, Ms. Acevedo told her husband that, in the event of her death, she would like to be cremated and to have a small festive, celebration of life at her home to commemorate her passing. Her husband is honoring her wishes. He and the rest of her family would nevertheless like to thank all of the neighbors who rushed to help Ms. Acevedo in her last moments, and express thanks for the outpouring of love and kind wishes that they have received from the community at large. Ms. Acevedo will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Ms. Acevedo's name to The ASPCA (see aspca.org/donate/)
