Obituary of Prudence Drummond

Prudence P. Drummond, long-time resident of New Canaan, died December 5, 2010 at home after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Dallas, Texas, on September 16, 1927, the only child of John Crumbaugh Porter and Ruth Corley Porter. Prue grew up in Terrell, Texas and was proud of her family’s place in Texas history. Her paternal grandfather, Walter C. Porter, was instrumental in the first agricultural experiments ever undertaken at his farm outside Terrell in 1903. These experiments ultimately led to the creation of the U.S. Agricultural Extension Service and, in the 1960s, the Porter Farm was named a National Historic Landmark. Her maternal grandfather, John Henry Corley, fought for the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg, and was a founding partner of Bivens & Corley, in Terrell, which through a series of mergers ultimately became the American National Bank of Texas, a privately held bank that has been in business continuously since 1875. Prue was the salutatorian of her graduating class of Terrell High School in 1945. She matriculated at Lindenwood College in St. Louis, MO, but ultimately graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. It was there that she met her husband, Robert Crawford Drummond who pre-deceased her in 2005. Prue and Bob married June 25, 1949. Over more than 50 years of marriage, they traveled the world. One of their joys later in life was to travel to different resorts and countries to play golf with family and friends. Together they traveled to all 50 states and many countries globally. Locally, Prue was very active in the 9-Holers of Silver Spring Country Club in Ridgefield, CT, where she was the 9-Hole Champion. For many years she also was an avid bowler and bridge player, accumulating many life master points and participating in bridge tournaments throughout the state. Prue also belonged to the New Canaan Women’s Club and she supported her children’s education by being the treasurer of the East School PTA for many years. A fond memory of her children is watching her work hard at the kitchen table to find that elusive penny….. Prue is survived by her three children and four grandsons: Ann Drummond Melsheimer and her husband, Matt of Scottsdale, AZ; David Porter Drummond and his wife Molly and their two children John and Michael Drummond, of San Diego, CA; and, Mary Drummond Lamb and her husband, Jim and their two children Corley and Kyle Lamb, of Glenmont, NY. Services will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Prue may be made to the New Canaan Library, 151 Main Street, New Canaan, or to Waveny Care Network, 3 Farm Road, New Canaan.
