Obituary of Allyne Brumbaugh
Allyne Sheila Brumbaugh, Teacher
Allyne S. Brumbaugh of Pound Ridge, NY, a teacher and wife of James H. Brumbaugh,
died Thursday, November 11, at New York University Hospital with her family at her
side. She was 61 and fought a courageous eight year battle with non-Hodgkin’s mantle
cell lymphoma.
Born August 19, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of Lee Ziontz and
Florence Ziontz and stepdaughter of Edith Ziontz.
Mrs. Brumbaugh was a graduate of Brooklyn College and later earned a master’s degree
from the same university.
She had a lifelong commitment to teaching and began her career teaching primary
school in Brooklyn, NY. She remained there for sixteen years where she taught mostly
second graders in PS 139 magna programs. In 1986, she started teaching at Greenacres
Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY where she worked until her health related retirement
in 2004.
During her career she authored books on teaching, enjoyed producing school plays in
Brooklyn and was at the forefront of new teaching methods. She really liked to challenge
her students.
Allyne loved reading and was a library supporter. She also authored New York Times
crossword puzzles and enjoyed any type of mind twisters.
She is survived by her husband James H. Brumbaugh of Pound Ridge, NY, sister Nancy
Waldman and brother-in-law Marc Waldman of Marlboro, New Jersey and their sons
Peter, Michael and Russell; brother Matthew Ziontz and sister-in-law Stacey Ziontz of
Port St. Lucie, Florida; sister-in-law Janet Feeman and brother-in-law Jerry Feeman of
Tallmadge, Ohio and their children Emily, Josh and Ben. She was also godmother to and
survived by Lisa, Nina and Johan, children of Julien and Ilse Britz, Ridgefield CT.
Services were held at Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan, CT on Sunday, November 14,
2010. Burial followed at the Pound Ridge Cemetery.
