Obituary of Frank LaDestro
Frank J. LaDestro, Sr.
Frank J. LaDestro, Sr, age 87, a longtime resident of New Canaan died Monday, August 9, 2010 at home. Born in Stamford July 16, 1923, he was the son of the late Philip and Elizabeth LaDestro. Frank is the husband of Margaret Corello LaDestro. He was a retired employee of the Town of New Canaan, where he held various positions including Foreman with the Parks Department. A WW II US Army veteran, Frank served his country in the Pacific Theater. Frank was an Auxiliary officer, as well as a long time member of the New Canaan Volunteer Fire Department. In addition Frank was a member of the Sons of Italy Pietro Micca Lodge #744 in Norwalk, and the Knights of Columbus, Fr. John Stapleton, Council # 2287 of New Canaan, for many years.
In addition to his wife survivors include, his daughter, Theresa Finnegan of New Canaan; son, Stephen R. LaDestro Sr. of Trumbull; a brother, Michael LaDestro of Wilton; and a sister, Angie Semenza of Florida.
Frank was pre-deceased by his son Frank Jr. in 2008, as well as four brothers and one sister.
After serving his country and working hard, Frank spent his years of retirement doing the things he loved most, like bowling, playing cards, and cheering on his beloved New York Giants and Yankees. But more fulfilling than that, he was a man who enriched the lives of his five grandchildren, Stephen R. LaDestro Jr. of Norwalk; and Jason Finnegan; Jessica Finnegan; Jeremy Finnegan; and Nicole LaDestro, all of New Canaan. In more recent years Frank had the pleasure of spending time with his three great granddaughters, Kayla, Gabrielle, and Harlow, who all adored their “Great Papa”.
He was a rare soul, who cared greatly about the happiness of those around him. He will be more than missed. Frank was the type of person whose loss will be felt throughout the community.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday August 14, 2010 at 12:30 PM at St Paul’s Church, 471 Mansfield Avenue, Darien, CT. Interment will be private, and at a later date. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to his wife Margaret.
