Obituary of Anthony Schembri
Anthony Angelo Schembri, 74, a resident of South Salem, NY, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on September 19, 2018. Anthony was born on November 3, 1943 in Queens, New York; He was the son of the late Fred and Philomena (DiPalma) Schembri.
Born and raised in Queens, New York, Anthony attended Pace College before enlisting in the United States Army where he served his country for two years during the Vietnam War. At the conclusion of his service, Anthony joined the family produce business, “Schembri’s” where he worked for over fifty years. The wholesale/retail business was a community staple for decades. Anthony was an avid reader and in his retirement volunteered at the New Canaan Library’s annual book sale. He was also an active parishioner of St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan where he participated in the Men’s Fellowship and Bible Study programs. Anthony was a proud husband, father and grandfather. He was happiest when surrounded by his family, and continually marveled at how he and his wife Rosemary grew into a family of twenty nine!
Anthony is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, his four sons: Anthony L. Schembri Jr (Tara) of White Plains, NY, Joseph L. Schembri (Nancy) of Westchester, NY, Fred Schembri (Jamie) of Rochester, MN, and Charles Schembri (Irene) of Long Island, NY, and his two daughters Carmela Callahan (Mark) of New York, NY and Phyllis Palleschi (Edward) of Long Island, NY. Anthony was also blessed with 15 grandchildren: Cicely, Helena, Lorelei, Leo, Nicholas, Grace, Belle, Benjamin, and Abigail Schembri, Kian, and Elizabeth Callahan, Paolo, Marco, Lucia, and Carlo Palleschi. As well as a brother Lorenzo Schembri.
The Schembri family will receive friends and family on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm, 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Hoyt Funeral Home 199 Main Street, New Canaan, CT 06840. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, September 24, 2018 at St. Aloysius Church, 21 Cherry St, New Canaan, CT 06840. Interment will follow with full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: The American Cancer Society.
