Obituary of Lawrence Bill

Lawrence Wilson Bill, a Vietnam War Veteran and long-time resident of New Canaan, CT, died peacefully on September 5, 2018 surrounded by his family. He succumbed to a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Larry was born in Greenwich, CT on September 22, 1947. The eldest son of the late Josiah Davison Wilson Bill and the late Elizabeth Barnum Bill, he was baptized at Christ Church in Greenwich. Larry’s father worked for several companies that transferred the family to a number of cities before settling in Mission, Kansas in the 1960’s. Larry graduated in 1965 from Shawnee Mission North High School, where he was a member of the award-winning Acapella Choir. He attended the University of Kansas with a major in Engineering. He was also a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and played football. Larry later earned his Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from American University. In 1967, Larry joined the Marine Corps and served as a fighter pilot, primarily flying A4’s. During the Yom Kippur War in 1973, he was stationed in the Mediterranean Sea. But for the majority of his military career, he supported America’s efforts in the Vietnam War. Notably, during the evacuation of Saigon in April 1975, he was responsible for commanding the landing zones for Marine helicopters airlifting people out of the country. Later that year, Larry was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. He settled in Northern California working for Prudential Bache before moving to New Canaan, CT in 1994. There, he became the founder and Chief Financial Officer of Phoenix Management Partners. Larry was also the Chief Executive Officer of Camp Hand-in-Hand, a local summer day camp for children. Larry was a faithful parishioner at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in New Canaan, where he participated in Men’s Group, Supper Club, and taught Sunday School. He is survived by his partner, Virginia Ayres of New Canaan, CT, his two daughters Elizabeth Bill Mendez (Mike) and Laura Bill Spiegel (Keenan) from his previous marriage, his partner’s children Jonathan, Elizabeth, William and Martel Bruno, his sister Elizabeth Bill Gross, his brother Josiah Bill, two grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on September 8th, 2018 at 11:00AM with burial immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s name to Vietnam Veterans of America.
