Obituary of Don Harbour

Don J. Harbour, 93, of New Canaan, CT passed away on August 28, 2018 at the Waveny Care Center. Born and raised outside of Columbus, Ohio to the late Thomas and Mary Curl Harbour, Don graduated high school at 16 and received a scholarship to study engineering at Ohio State where he lived in Buckeye Stadium, and room and board was $40 a month. On weekends he trained with the military and memorized the Morse Code. When he was drafted during WWll, he took a train to San Francisco and a liberty troop ship to New Guinea, spending time in Okinawa and was there when the atomic bomb went off. After serving his country for 3 years, Don was discharged home by Christmas. In 1945, he became engaged to his longtime girlfriend Mary and they were married in 1946. They remained married for 61 years until Mary’s passing in 2007. Don returned to Ohio State on the GI Bill, and after graduation was recruited by General Electric where he had an outstanding 35 year career as an engineer and inventor who helped colleagues get patents for reversing valves in air conditioning and heating units. Not only did Don and Mary live in many places while at GE, but they travelled with customers to Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Tahiti, settling in New Canaan in 1976. Don’s love and passion for engineering didn’t stop upon retirement. He started a Home Inspection and Commercial/Investment division which kept him busy. Don is survived by his daughter Shirley Harbour, of New Hampshire and his son Glenn Harbour, of Florida. Also surviving Don are 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 4th from 9-11am at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St, New Canaan, CT. In Lieu of flowers contributions in Don’s memory can be made to a veterans organization of your choice.
