Obituary of Eleanor Powers
Eleanor Cooney Powers , longtime New Canaan and Naples, Florida resident, , passed away peacefully on June 16, 2018.
Daughter of the late Bernard and Anna Cooney, Eleanor was born on July 24, 1933 in Waban, MA. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband and best friend, John F. Powers. John and Eleanor loved to travel to the far reaches of the world in retirement, and spending time together on the beach and golfing in Naples.
Growing up as a middle child in a freckle-faced Irish Catholic family, Eleanor was an ardent fan of all things Boston, especially the Red Sox. A graduate of Framingham Teachers College, Eleanor loved her time in the classroom, whether teaching, substituting or volunteering. Eleanor also treasured her weekday morning coffee and conversations with her dear friends in New Canaan.
She is survived by her devoted children Martha, Betsy Glavin (Tom), of Brighton, NY, Julie DeMarco (Vince) of Fairfield, CT, Jed (Chris) of Cos Cob and Kate Young (Dean) of Cos Cob, and her 12 cherished grandchildren Kerry, Jake (Courtney), Paul, Peter (Heather), Tim, Tess, Jack, Luke, Megan, Jay, Charlie, and Tom. She is also survived by her siblings, Barbara, Bernard and Mary. She was predeceased by her siblings Nancy, Richard, Joe and Vinny, and nieces Tara and CC.
Calling hours will be held at Hoyt Funeral Home 199 Main St. New Canaan on Thursday, June 21, between 5 and 8 pm.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Aloysius Church, Cherry St. New Canaan on Friday, June 22 at 10 am.
The family is so grateful for the loving care given to Eleanor by Dr. Richard Westfal, and the nursing staff of Waveny Care Center and hospice care through Constellation.
In lieu of flowers, Eleanor would love you to take a walk on the beach, or plant a garden, and most importantly, spend time with those you love.
