Obituary of Rodney Aspinwall
Rodney W. Aspinwall, a resident of New Canaan, passed away on Sunday,
June 2, 2018 (following a long illness) at the age of 75.
He was born in Staten Island, NY on June 18, 1942. The family moved to
Milford, Pennsylvania when he was 8 and spent his youth there.
Rod obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Pennsylvania State University.
Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he
attended the U.S. Naval Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, R.I. There he
studied communication and fleet sonar. Rod achieved the rank of Lieutenant Jr.
Grade and served in Naval Intelligence from 1965-1968. During most of
his term of service he had the great fortune to be stationed in Bermuda. After
active duty he continued to serve in the Naval Reserve for a number of years.
After his tour of duty with the Navy he joined the work force in a variety of
sales and management positions. He attended Pace University and Mercy
College and obtained a second Bachelor of Arts in Business and studied for
an MBA. Rod’s business life was focused on the sales and management of
printing services. He was employed by a number of printing companies and
ultimately his entrepreneurial spirit led him to form his own printing company,
Dodson and Fogg. He was a successful and creative business man who was
never afraid to explore new methods and directions. Rod enthusiastically
enjoyed a number of hobbies. He was an accomplished athlete throughout
his academic and naval career. He was an avid golfer throughout his life and
supported Penn State athletics as a life member of the Penn State Alumni
Association. Rod was a life long student of economics, investing and personal
finance. He used his expertise in this area to help friends and family navigate
the complexities of personal finance. His studies in this area included
membership in the Corporate Society of the Oxford Club. All who knew Rod
would probably agree that his two main recreational delights were bridge
and gardening. He was a highly competitive and skilled bridge player and
obtained the rank of American Contract Bridge League Silver Life Master.
In spite of this achievement, which put him in competition among the finest
in the world, he always encouraged new-comers to the game and said that
having fun was the most important thing. Rod was energetic and passionate
in all that he undertook. His positive energy led him to love and serve his
family well. His parents (deceased) were George F. and Norma Brown Aspinwall.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Agneta Dreifaldt Aspinwall, his son,
Daniel L. and fiancé Sharon E. Arena of Norwalk, two sisters, Susan Aspinwall
Ramsey of Hilton Head, SC and Evelyn Aspinwall Ascherman of Charlotte, NC
and a number of treasured nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Rod and
his wife, Agneta have been active members of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church
in New Canaan from the day of their wedding. They have served their God and their church in a variety of ways over the years. A memorial service for family
and friends will be held at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in the near future.
