JANE GOFF MURPHY of Norwalk, formerly of New Canaan, died at age 74 on May 8, 2009. Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of the late Florence Williams and Louis Bliss Goff of Providence, RI. She grew up and was educated in Providence, where she graduated from Lincoln School in 1953 and from Katharine Gibbs School. She worked in the alumni office of Brown University and subsequently commenced her career in retail by working in the family haberdashery business, Mack's Inc., on Thayer Street in Providence. Mrs. Murphy moved to New Canaan in 1963, where she was assistant manager and buyer for Bob's Sports for nearly 20 years. She later worked for Union Trust Private Banking in Greenwich and for Kelly Realty in Darien. Mrs. Murphy is survived by her daughter Kimberly and son-in-law Richard Brown. Her marriage to the late Christopher Murphy ended in divorce. Mrs. Murphy was a loving mother and devoted friend with a keen interest in helping others. She was a voracious reader, an avid traveler, and a lover of nature. She lived her life with great resilience, resourcefulness, courage, curiosity and humor, and with deep pride in and gratitude to her Welsh forebears. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stephen Ministry group at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, and to Under One Roof, Inc., Norwalk.
