Obituary of Joseph Scavetta
Joseph F. Scavetta, M.D., age 68, a long-time resident of Wilton, CT, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 30, 2010, surrounded by his family. Dr. Scavetta was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, where he met and married his wife Camille, whom he was married to for over 45 years.
After graduating from Iona College and Loyola University of Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine, Dr. Scavetta served in the U.S. Air Force as a Major at Travis Air Force Base in California, treating soldiers returning from the Vietnam War. Dr. Scavetta then joined the medical staff at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, CT, where he served as senior staff psychiatrist, chief of the Adult Psychiatric Program, and chief of the Substance Abuse Program. During his tenure at the hospital, Dr. Scavetta also served as an associate professor at New York Medical College. Before retiring from Silver Hill, Dr. Scavetta was the hospital’s physician in chief and was elected to Silver Hill’s Board of Directors. After retiring, Silver Hill renamed the residence for men participating in extended-stay treatment to the Scavetta House. Even after retiring, Dr. Scavetta continued to serve on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Scavetta is survived by his wife, Camille; his mother, Ann; his son, Frank, and daughter-in-law, Diana; his son, Joseph; his daughter, Elena White, and son-in-law, Ted White; and his grandchildren, Stephen and Eden Scavetta, and Finley White.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held in his honor on Friday, June 4, 2010, at 12:00 noon at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 229 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897, immediately followed by an internment service at St. John’s Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06850. The family will be hosting a reception after the interment service, with details to follow.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, CT 06840, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
