Obituary of Dorothy Hutchinson

Mrs. Dorothy Marie Hutchinson, nee Swinnerton, born on May tenth of 1922 in Stamford, Connecticut, died at mid-morning on Tuesday, October twenty-second of this year, at Norwalk Hospital of complications of a fall last Christmas. She was surrounded by her grown children. Beginning with her graduation from Stamford High School two years early at age 16; through her thirty-five years of marriage to her beloved husband, Edwin Charles Hutchinson, originally of New Haven, Connecticut, who sadly predeceased her in 1977; through her raising of six children; through her years of service as an executive secretary, first for the Special Education Office of the New Canaan Public Schools; then for many years as the Executive Secretary to the First Selectman of New Canaan: Mrs. Hutchinson was known for her New England work ethic, strength of character and the sheer breadth and depth of activity on behalf of her family members and her communities. She reluctantly retired at the age of 82 after having begun her years of service to the schools and to the town of New Canaan in 1968. She served thirty-six continuous years. She was noted, among her many accomplishments, for her expert organization of New Canaan's iconic traditional Memorial Day Parade. After her retirement, Mrs. Hutchinson was an enthusiastic member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Hannah Benedict Chapter of New Canaan, CT. Mrs. Hutchinson is survived by one of her five siblings, Mrs. Joan Lewis of Greenwich, and her six grown children, all graduates of New Canaan High School and various Colleges: Nancy Hutchinson Erdmann of Cambridge, MA; Robert E. Hutchinson of Norwalk, CT; Carol M. Hutchinson of Wellesley, MA; David C. Hutchinson of Ketchum, ID; Alan J. Hutchinson of Chicago, IL and Glenn A. Hutchinson of Wilton, CT. Her daughters-in-law are Georgia and Karen Hutchinson of Ketchum, ID, and Chicago, IL respectively. Her son-in-law is Anthony C. Erdmann, M.D., of Cambridge, MA. She is also survived by seven grandsons: Robert Hutchinson, Jr., of Norwalk, CT; William Hutchinson of Darien, CT; Jake Erdmann of Lee, MA; Jesse Erdmann of Cambridge, MA; Chase Hutchinson of Ketchum, ID; Diego Erdmann of Cambridge, MA; Tripp Hutchinson of Ketchum, ID; and Ben Hutchinson of Chicago, IL. Her five granddaughters are: Daisy Erdmann of Cambridge, MA; Johanna Erdmann of Cambridge, MA; Julia Erdmann of Cambridge, MA; Scout Hutchinson of Ketchum, ID; and Dahlia Erdmann of Cambridge, MA. Mrs. Hutchinson's parents, Arthur and Margaret Swinnerton, lived at 85 Stephen Street in Stamford, CT for the greater part of their lives with their six children. Her paternal grandparents were the Rev. William Swinnerton, originally of England and the long-time pastor of the Stamford Congregational Church, and his second wife, Almira Hooker Swinnerton, originally of Vermont. Mrs. Hutchinson’s maternal grandparents were Patrick and Julia Barrett, originally of County Cork and County Clare of Ireland. Mrs. Hutchinson used her background, intelligence, vivacity and values for the maximum years during her ninety-one years. She was an organizer, a leader and a powerhouse. Her children and grandchildren are proud to resemble her even though, they say, matching her is surely out of their reach.
