Obituary of Peter Emmons
Peter B. Emmons
86, of New Canaan passed away May 11th at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport, CT. Born on May 29, 1923 in Washington D.C. he was the son of the late Roger Blake Emmons and Katharine DuBois Emmons.
Peter moved to New Canaan from Pasadena, CA in 1927. He attended the New Canaan Public Schools, New Canaan Country School, Fessenden School in West Newton, MA. and Milton Academy, Milton, MA.
He serviced in the Military Police division of the army from 1943-1946, serving during the Liberation of Paris and Battle of the Bulge. Peter received an honorable discharge.
Always in the insurance business Peter was employed by Frank & Dubois, New York City, Shelby Mutual Insurance Co. In 1957 he opened Emmons and Co. in New Canaan later to become known as Emmons and Wilson Inc. He was president of the Mid Fairfield County Insurance Agents and President of the Professional Insurance Agents of Connecticut.
Peter retired to Cataumet, MA. in 1983, twenty years later he returned to New Canaan to reside at the New Canaan Inn.
He was a member of the Country Club of New Canaan where he enjoyed playing tennis, golf and paddle tennis. Peter also was a member the Cataumet Club in Cataumet, MA and the Buzzards Yacht Club. Peter loved Buzzards Bay; he enjoyed sailing and simply sitting on his deck enjoying the beautiful sunsets over Squeteaque Harbor.
His civic duties included; director of the United Way, chairman of the Waveny purchase committee, trustee of the New Canaan library, trustee of the New Canaan Savings Bank, president of the Poinsettia Club, governor of the Country Club of New Canaan, secretary of the board of finance, secretary of the New Canaan historical society, president and board member of the Thorne Clinic and a member of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce.
Peter was preceded in death by his son, Peter Blake Emmons, Jr. and his second wife, Catherine Smyth Emmons. His survivors include his daughter, Constance Emmons Brown and her husband Tim, New Canaan, CT; David Wintrop Emmons and his wife Natalie, Carlsbad, CA; two grandsons, Tim Brown and Matt Brown and two granddaughters Maggie Brown and Katharine Emmons. He will be greatly missed by all.
