Obituary of Ruth McCarthy

Ruth Parry Owen McCarthy, aged 97, formerly of Stratford and longtime resident of Stamford died peacefully on January 18, 2018 at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Utica, New York on September 23, 1920 she was the daughter of the late John E. and Lily Parry Owen and the wife of the late William C. McCarthy. Ruth received a Bachelor of Arts from Buffalo State Teachers College and a Master of Arts from Bridgeport University. She taught art in primary schools in upstate New York and, for more than 20 years, in Stamford. Ruth was a lifelong lover of tennis, ice skating, music and dance. In retirement she continued to develop her art, concentrating on watercolor painting. She was an active member of the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford. She and her husband Bill both enjoyed winters spent in Scottsdale, Arizona where they relaxed and made many new friends. Ruth loved having family around her, especially when music and dancing were involved. She is survived by her four daughters, Gail Neves and her husband Simon of Gloucestershire, England, Susan Williams and her husband Thomas of Arlington, VT, Jill McCarthy-Stoll and her husband Barry of Dedham, MA and Rue McCarthy and her husband Yamasa of Stamford. Five grandchildren also survive including Alexander Neves, Nicholas Neves and wife Juliana, Bryan Stoll and wife Emily, Sydney Stoll and husband Jack Abelson, Evan Williams, wife Liz and their daughter Stella, Ruth’s first great-grandchild. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Bedford Street, Stamford, CT 06905, on March 10, 2018 at 10:00AM.
