Obituary of Janette Fenton

Janette A. Fenton, a resident of New Canaan for 46 years, died peacefully on November 21, 2017, surrounded by family. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 11, 1938, Jan was the second of three daughters of Josephine and Christopher Farrell, of Dublin Ireland. She married John Fenton in 1962, moving to New Canaan in 1967. Jan and John had five children: Jillian, Timothy, Hope, Meredith, and Anthony. Jan attended Southern CT State and KULeuven (Belgium), and attained graduate degrees in Art/Religion from Fairfield University and the College of New Rochelle. She was an art therapist at local health programs including Silver Hill Hospital and Renfrew Center, heading the CT Art Therapy Association and a published author in professional journals. Jan was beautiful, courageous and unstoppable. She inspired others to both find and create beauty in this world. Themes in her own paintings were inspired by her children, her travels, and her abiding faith. A kind, dynamic, and visionary leader, Jan took on challenges with heart and determination. When a decrepit building in Waveny Park in New Canaan was threatened with demolition, Jan envisioned a thriving and beautiful arts center where arts, music and theatre could have a home. She petitioned the town, galvanized volunteers, and made that seminal dream a reality for generations to come, creating the Carriage Barn Arts Center and the New Canaan Society for the Arts, efforts recognized by the New York Times. She was active in fighting Cystic Fibrosis, leading the “Tony Fenton Bike Tour for CF,” a successful fundraiser for 16 years. She also raised awareness of organ donation, initiating the ongoing state poster contest for students. She was predeceased by her children Meredith and Tony who each died from Cystic Fibrosis. She is survived by her sisters Mary Parker (Sparta NJ) and Christine Staub (Manhattan NY); three children – Jillian Fenton and spouse Blake Billings (Portsmouth RI), Timm Fenton and spouse Kelly (Seattle WA), and Hope Finn (Norwalk CT); their father John Fenton (Ridgefield CT); as well as her beloved nine grandchildren: Hannah, Caleb and Gabrielle Fenton; Fen, John, Lucia and Teresa Billings; and Tyghe and Sheila Finn. Mass will be held Saturday, December 2 at 10:00am, at Our Lady of Fatima Church (Wilton), with interment at Lakeview Cemetery (New Canaan).
