Obituary of George Hasapis

George Hasapis, 81 and a resident of New Canaan for 48 years, passed away peacefully at his home on Brooks Road surrounded by his family on October 22, 2017. George was born in New York Hospital, NY, NY on September 15, 1936 to Angelina and Peter Hasapis. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York and attended Boys’ High, where he was an exceptional student and was chosen as a Ford Foundation Scholar to attend Columbia University when he was only 16 years old. He rowed crew for the Lions and was a member of the Delta Phi fraternity at Columbia, from which he received an A.B. in 1956 and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering as part of their 3/2 program in 1957. He went on to receive an M.B.A. from New York University in 1962. In 1965, George married Alice Xenakis and the couple had their first child, Peter George, in 1968. The family relocated from Brooklyn to New Canaan, CT in March of 1969, and in July of 1972, they welcomed another son, Anthony James. George had a long and successful career working for Olin Corporation in Stamford, CT for over 35 years until his retirement in 1999. He loved his work, but not nearly as much as he loved his family. He was an exceptionally devoted husband and father who always put his family first. He was also very dedicated to the Church of the Archangels, of which he was a member for 48 years. During his time there, he taught Sunday school, coached multiple basketball teams, volunteered annually at the Greek festival and was a member and president of the church’s Senior Group. Following his retirement in 1999, he spent countless hours volunteering at Norwalk Hospital in the Emergency Department which he found fulfilling. He also loved playing tennis, fishing, reading, playing hallway soccer, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his two sons, Peter and Tony, and their wives Jessica and Dawn; the five grandchildren whom he loved dearly – William, Teddy, Elizabeth, Lindsay, and Ryan; his sister, Mary Filoukatjis, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Alice, and his brother, James. The family will receive friends at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St, New Canaan, CT on Tuesday, October 24 from 4-8 pm. The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, October 25 at 10am at The Church of the Archangels in Stamford, CT. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan.
