Obituary of Harry Hazlehurst

Harry Hazlehurst III died at home on October 2, 2013. He was 81 years old. He met his future wife, Marion Jean Sadler, in grammar school; they became sweethearts in high school and were married upon their college graduations in June 1954. They shared a wonderful life for 59+ years. Born September 17, 1932, in Washington, DC, Harry was the son of the late Harry Hazlehurst Jr. and the late Alice Peterson Hazlehurst, living in suburban Maryland. He attended McKinley (Technical) High School in Washington, DC -- graduating in 1950. While there, he was selected to participate in a newly established pre-engineering program. He was awarded a Navy Scholarship and studied at Penn State graduating magna cum laude in 1954 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a Commission as Ensign in the Navy. He served three years on destroyer type ships and, while serving as engineering officer, his ship was awarded the engineering "E" for excellence for the destroyer escort class of ships in the Atlantic Fleet. He was awarded two letters of commendation and was selected as a member of the commissioning crew of a new destroyer, the USS Manley. In 1957, Harry began his business career with the Esso Corporation (later Exxon) and held positions in engineering, manufacturing, product management, technology, and new venture management that were mainly related to the Company's domestic and international specialty chemicals businesses. He attended night school and earned an MBA from Rutgers in 1961. In 1962, he was recalled to active duty during the Berlin Emergency and, for most of a year served in the Caribbean aboard a destroyer escort, gathering information on the Russian missile build-up in Cuba. Harry served twice (1969-73, 1981-85) as the Esso/Exxon executive in Brazil responsible for chemical operations. During the first tour, Harry served as a director of the Escola Americana (grades K-12) in Rio de Janeiro at the time a new campus was constructed and began operation. Additionally, he was an advisor to the Youth For Understanding USA-Brazil student exchange program. Upon return from his second tour in 1985, he and Marion settled in New Canaan. Harry joined the worldwide headquarters of the Exxon Chemical Company, then based in Darien, CT, where he was the executive with global responsibility for performance enhancing products for lubricants until his retirement in 1990. Soon after retirement, Harry joined the International Executive Service Corps based in Stamford, CT, and served as a volunteer in the recruiting function for fourteen years. With Marion's participation, he assisted IESC operations as a Country Director and/or volunteer advisor to private sector businesses. His time spent overseas in six countries was about two years. He was recipient of the David Rockefeller Spirit of Service Award and the White House Call to Service Award. In recent years, Harry was active in the management of the Canaan Close Condominium, in the Exxon Annuitants Club of CT and in the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan. Harry is survived by his beloved wife Marion; a sister, Alice H. Barreca, of Redding, CT; and four children: Susan Hazlehurst Milbrath of Greenwood Village, CO; Catherine Hazlehurst da Cruz (Jose) of Ridgefield, CT; Janice C. Hazlehurst (Stephen Charles) of Bethesda, MD; and Robert W. Hazlehurst (Cindy) of Castle Rock, CO. Additionally he is survived by seven cherished grandchildren: Caroline and Jeffrey Milbrath, Stephen and Thomas da Cruz, Amelia and Raphael Moura, and Austin Hazlehurst; as well as a loving extended family.
