Obituary of Norine Toole
Norine Reilly Toole of New Canaan, CT passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Born in Bronxville, NY, Norine, daughter of Dr. Richard and Helen Reilly, spent her childhood in Scarsdale where her lively and competitive spirit flourished. Her high school field hockey teammates remember her as being a fierce competitor. Her siblings, Dick and Al Reilly, always thought of her as the life of the party. As a teen, Norine’s all-American good looks landed her on the Kodak big screen advertisement in Grand Central Terminal. Following high school, Norine pursued American Studies at Skidmore where she graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree.
After graduating she moved to New York City with three of her best friends and worked in human resources where she was also a member of the New York City Junior League. Within a year of arriving in New York City she met Edward Dillon Toole and they started a marriage that was to last 57 years. Soon after their wedding, Norine and Ed started their family. They raised their family in Scarsdale, NY and then in Dallas, Texas before moving to New Canaan, CT in 1984.
Norine embraced life with great enthusiasm, and a taste for adventure. She was a voracious reader and loved to be active; she proudly passed her love of reading, swimming and tennis to her 4 children. Throughout her life she was a passionate volunteer. As a member of the Junior League in Dallas, Norine performed puppet shows for young children in local hospitals and schools. With two close friends, she founded a successful boutique gift company that enabled them to travel to Mexico and sell their found treasures at trunk and gift shows. Her winning smile and great figure also enabled her to model in New York City and at the Dallas Apparel Mart.
After moving to New Canaan her passion for travel led her to become a travel agent at the Around the World Travel Agency. She volunteered regularly at the New Canaan Historical Society. She loved to entertain friends and she often hosted Thanksgivings for dozens of family members. As she was all smiles as the perfect hostess, she was also a very tough competitor on the tennis court. She was an avid skier until the age of 70. She had an amazing skill of striking up engaging conversations with everyone she met, making them feel like old friends. Norine had a sparkle in her eye and was up for fun until the day she died.
Norine is survived by her husband Ed, her sons Ed and Allan from Dallas and her daughters Denise Ringer from Dallas and Alice Baldwin from Darien, CT as well as her eleven grandchildren. Her funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 2pm at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 21 Cherry Street, New Canaan, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the New Canaan Historical Society.
