Obituary of Lois Spinola

Lois B. Spinola, 92, a resident of New Canaan for 33 years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 28. She is survived by a loving family: her husband of 61 years, Ray; their daughter Amy and her husband Tom Corcoran and children Conor, Bennett and Emma; daughter Beth and husband Joel Simon, and children Olivia, Josephine and Luisa; and son Mark Spinola and son Warren. Lois was born on January 18, 1925 in Royal Oak, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, to William and Clara Clark. She graduated from Hillsdale (MI) College in 1948 with a degree in economics, and subsequently worked for a chain of women’s apparel shops in Detroit’s suburbs. She later joined the J. L. Hudson Company, Detroit’s leading department store at the time, where she managed the Women’s Sportswear Department until the first of her children arrived. Lois and Ray were married in 1956, having met while skiing in Northern Michigan in January of that year, were engaged in May and married in September. They moved to New Canaan in 1983 when Ray, a Deloitte partner, was transferred from Detroit to New York. Last September they repeated their marriage vows and celebrated their 60th anniversary with family and friends. Lois was a loving person whose greatest concern was her family. She enjoyed people and had many long, lasting friendships. Lois and a group of widely dispersed graduates from Hillsdale College continued to meet annually for over 60 years. And she cherished her membership in the PEO Sisterhood and the friendships that ensued. An avid walker, Lois often hiked for two or three miles a couple of times a week well into her seventies. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to visit her daughters’ families who lived a combined total of 19 years in London or Paris. A graveside service was held on Friday, June 30, for Lois’ immediate family. A memorial service and celebration of Lois’ life will be held Saturday, August 12 at 11AM at the Congregational Church of New Canaan, 23 Park Street. For those caring to make a memorial gift, the family suggests Alzheimer’s Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
