Obituary of Norma Moreno
Norma Moreno, age 82, of New Canaan, left this world on April 23rd at home, embraced by the love of her children and grandchildren and with the “love of her life” and husband of 60 years, Luis at her side.
Born in Managua, Nicaragua, in 1927, Norma was the only child of Carmen Guabello de Gallegos and Hans Thomsen. She was raised primarily in San Salvador, El Salvador and later moved with her mother and step-father, Antonio Guabello to Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, during WWII, and then New York City, where she attended the School of the Holy Child. In 1950, at age 23, Norma was working in New York City for Danish silversmith, George Jensen, when she met and married Luis, A. Moreno, Jr. The couple chose Wilton, Connecticut to raise their four children, and remained until 1995, when they moved to New Canaan, Connecticut.
With striking beauty, great humor and innate intelligence, Norma was the kind of person that filled the room with her presence and connected instantly with people wherever she went. A great traveler, she never permitted the polio, which she had contracted as a child, to limit her life in any way. A passionate and creative woman of many talents, Norma made her home and children her career. She was the hub that drew family and friends home and kept loved ones near and far connected. Tita, as she was known by her grandchildren, will remain a living and breathing inspiration through her children and grandchildren. The hearts of many who knew and loved her will ache for the loss of her.
Norma is survived by her husband, Luis A. Moreno, Jr. of New Canaan, CT; her eldest son, Robert A. Moreno, and fiancé, Judy King, of Princeton, NJ; her youngest son, Steven L. Moreno, of Delray Beach, FL; her eldest daughter, Tina Smith, and husband, Mark; long-time residents of Rowayton/Norwalk, CT; her youngest daughter, Victoria Oligino, and husband, James, of New Canaan, CT, formerly of Stratford, CT; and her six grandchildren, who were the joys of her life: Stephanie Smith and fiancé Adam Towers of Norwalk, CT; Natalie Smith of New York, NY; Cristina Smith also of Norwalk, CT; Michelle Moreno and Annette Moreno, of Princeton, NJ; and her one grandson, James Oligino, currently attending Boston College in Boston, MA. Norma also leaves behind extended family across the globe, including her dear cousins, Evelyn and Rodolfo Guirola, and the rest of the Guirola family in San Salvador, El Salvador.
The family invites friends to join them in their celebration of Norma with services to be held at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan, CT at 11:00 on April 27th. Donations may be made to the Whittingham Cancer Center in Norwalk, CT or to the Mid-Fairfield Hospice of Wilton,CT.
