Obituary of George McGinniss
Dr. George Hoyt McGinniss, 68, of New Canaan, died on Sunday June 4, 2017 at home with his loving family by his side.
Dr. McGinniss was born on May 10, 1949 to the late George S. and Madalene Garrity McGinniss and grew up in Westport. He was a 1967 graduate of Fairfield Prep. He graduated from Medical School in three years from Georgetown University, where he was also an undergraduate. He completed his internship and residency in orthopaedics in New York City at St. Luke’s/Columbia and Mount Sinai, and was awarded a fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Olympic Training Center.
Dr. McGinniss joined Dr. John Carino in private practice in Stamford in 1984 where he founded the Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center. His focus was always on the young athlete and rehabilitation. Dr. McGinniss advocated for listening to the feedback from your own body to safeguard health throughout life. He was also known to stitch his sons and their fellow hockey players on his kitchen table.
Having grown up on Long Island Sound, Dr. McGinniss had a life-long love for the ocean. He started surfing at age 50 with his three sons, then 12, 9, and 7. Their frequent trips always included three ingredients: culture, food and surf. Whether in the Galapagos, Morocco, or Chile, the trips with his boys fulfilled his passion for adventure. Other interests included playing Polo, which he learned from a French cavalry officer in the Belgian countryside; 18th century French antique auctions, where he was known to outwit dealers in fluent French; cooking; finding bargains at flea markets; and ruffling feathers.
Dr. McGinniss is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cristina Germain McGinniss, and his three sons, George Hoyt Edward of Sagaponack, New York; Richard Bryant of Washington, D.C.; and James (Bo) Roland of Austin, Texas; a brother, Richard John, and a nephew, Ryan Patrick, both of St. Petersburg, Florida.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Congregational Church of New Canaan at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 17th.
