Obituary of Anne Brokaw
Anne Brokaw of Norwalk, CT, formerly of New Canaan and a longtime parishioner of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church there, died on Tuesday, May 30, at Autumn Lake Healthcare in Norwalk. Her husband, Caleb Brokaw, predeceased her in 2011.
Katherine Anne Clare Hammersley Johnston was born to Douglas Hammersley Johnston and Clare Waters Johnston on Sept 8, 1931, in Auckland, New Zealand, where her father was serving as an officer in the Royal Navy. Her father had a distinguished naval career, including service in World Wars I and II. After World War II, Captain Johnston returned to Auckland as the Senior Officer of the New Zealand Squadron. Mrs. Brokaw was educated at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham, England. When she finished school, she joined her parents in Auckland, where she made her debut, and later moved to New York City, where she worked for UNICEF and met her husband, Caleb Brokaw. They were married on July 23, 1955, at St. Stephen’s Church, Westminster, London.
Anne and Caleb Brokaw moved to New Canaan in 1959, and became active members of the community in addition to raising three daughters. Mrs. Brokaw devoted many years to service in New Canaan, including volunteering at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church raising funds for charity through the New Canaan Sewing Group, delivering Meals on Wheels, serving on the vestry of St. Mark’s and acting as the Secretary of the Board of the United Way of New Canaan. The family’s time in New Canaan was interrupted for three years by a relocation to Brussels, Belgium, by Texaco, Mr. Brokaw’s employer, after which they returned to New Canaan.
Mrs. Brokaw was an avid, tireless traveler who visited every continent except Antarctica, more than once. Mrs. Brokaw was also an enthusiastic tennis player and longtime member of the New Canaan Field Club. She had a gift for lasting friendships; she is survived by many friends of several decades, including dozens from her years in New York, Brussels and New Canaan and from childhood with whom she corresponded regularly. Mrs. Brokaw is also survived by her three daughters, Clare Brokaw Speyer of Wallingford, Connecticut, Katherine Brokaw of Atlanta, Georgia, and Caroline Brokaw Tucker of New Canaan, as well as two sons-in-law, Andrew Speyer and Steven Russ, and eight grandchildren.
Mrs. Brokaw shared a lifelong love of classical music with her late husband and she often attended performances of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic, with him or with friends. She studied music history at Manhattanville College. A memorial service will be held on July 9, 2017 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, New Canaan, CT at 12:30 pm with a reception at the church to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Music Fund of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
