Obituary of Ruth Walters
Ruth Steel Walters
October 31, 1929 - March 23, 2017
Ruth Steel Walters passed away of natural causes at Norwalk Hospital March 23, 2017. She was born Ruth Ann Steel in Williamsport, PA on October 31, 1929, the third child of Ruth H. and Charles C. Steel. After a rough and tumble childhood, during which she learned to hold her own against her two older brothers, Hales and Jim, and excelling in diving and other sports, Ruth embarked on a lifelong career of helping others achieve their best.
She studied at East Stroudsburg State Teacher's College and proceeded to achieve a Masters in Education and Psychology. She was working in New Jersey when she met the love of her life, Harold F Walters. Harry and Ruth then moved to Connecticut where she pursued a career as a High School Psychologist and Phys-Ed Instructor. Ruth and Harry spent years enjoying their boat on Long Island Sound, wood-working and crafts, spending time in Atlantic City, lots of laughs and growing older together with their beloved dogs Sam, Summer, and Barkley.
It was a sad day when Ruth lost "her Harry" to cancer in 2009. She and Barkley continued on with the help of her grief support group, many of whom became cherished friends as the years progressed. Virginia Toms of Wilton became the best of those friends. The two had many fun adventures together and supported each other through the tougher times as well. Ruth's family was blessed to have Virginia. Her loyalty and loving care for our aunt set our minds at ease when we were too distant to be by her side. Ruth moved to The Greens at Cannondale in Wilton last year, where she continued her independent lifestyle with the help of their gracious staff and management.
Her family would also like to express gratitude to Bryan DeYoung and his family as they treated Ruth with abundant love and respect, sharing their home, holidays, children, and time with Ruth. She could always count on Bryan to be there when she needed some help with upkeep and "fix-its" around the house and she could always count on “Ginny” just to be there.
Ruth is survived by her nephews, James R Steel Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Florida; Stephen H Steel and his wife, Kathlyn, of Idaho; and a niece, Catherine S DeHart and her husband Howard, of Idaho. Ruth will be interred next to her beloved Harry 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Riverside Cemetery for those who would like to attend. Her family suggests any donations be made in her name to PAWS (Pet Animal Welfare Society, Inc.) of Norwalk. Arrangements by Hoyt Funeral and Cremation Services.
