Ruth G. Briody, a long time Wilton resident, died peacefully in her bed at Scalabrini Villa in North Kingstown, Rhode Island on March 23, 2017. She was 89. Born Ruth Eileen Gately, she was the youngest of four children born to Francis and Julia (O’Brien) Gately of West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Ruth attended Roslindale High School, serving on the Senior Council and graduating in 1945. She later attended the Chandler School for Women and worked as a private secretary in banks and business institutions for many years. She married the late Thomas Allen Briody in 1955, and together the couple lived in Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, New York and California before settling in Connecticut in 1976. They were married 58 years. In the 1970s and 80s, Ruth worked as an executive secretary for Americares of New Canaan, the Olin Corporation of Stamford, as well as Lord and Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue. She was a communicant at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. She loved travelling, her pet miniature schnauzers, and golfing at Woodway Country Club. Always a supporter of community service, Ruth was an enthusiastic member of the PEO sorority, and leaves many friends behind. She is survived by her sister Roberta of Dover, Massachusetts; her son and daughter in law Thomas Briody and Karen McGoldrick, M.D., of North Kingstown, Rhode Island; and her son Scott Briody of Salem, New Hampshire; as well as five grandchildren: Victoria, Alexandra, Christian, Shea and Thomas. Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 pm at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan on March 28. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Aloysius Church, 21 Cherry Street, New Canaan at 10 am, March 29, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Scalabrini Villa, 860 N.
