Obituary of Joan Igler

Joan Howarth Igler, formerly of New Canaan, passed away peacefully February 25, 2017. Born June 19, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Walter E. Howarth. She graduated in 1952 from the School of Education at the College for Women, University of Pennsylvania, after which she taught elementary education. She was married to Edwin R. Igler in 1953. Moving to New Canaan in 1968, she was actively involved in school, church and as a Boy and Girl Scout leader. She served as President of the American Field Service New Canaan Chapter, was on the board of ABC (A Better Chance) for eight years and served in many capacities at the Congregation Church of New Canaan. In 2002 she received the Donald Cameron Human Kindness Award. She also volunteered for five years with Prisoner Visitation and Support at the Danbury Correctional Institution. She worked briefly for H+R Block, then for seven years as a paralegal in the New Canaan law firm of Hawthorne, Ackerly, and Dorrance. She was a member of the Lake Club, where she was an active tennis player. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Edwin R. Igler, and is survived by three children: Thomas, and wife Sarah, of Severna Park, MD; Janet Smith, and husband Jeff, of Larchmont, NY; Karen Igler of Millersville, MD; two sisters, Jean Latimer of Cincinnati, OH and Janet Howarth of Santa Barbara, CA; eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am Saturday, March 11, at the New Canaan Congregational Church.
