Obituary of Edna Noiles
Edna Truitt Noiles passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children in her New Canaan home on February 9th, 2017. She was daughter of Vera and Ashton Truitt of Burlington, N.C.
Mrs. Noiles graduated from Elon College (now Elon University) in 1944. She then joined the United States Naval Reserve where she met her future husband, Douglas Noiles, who predeceased her in 2016. A wife for 70 years, mother of four, Mrs. Noiles returned to further education after her youngest child went to college. In her 50’s she became a Marriage and Family Therapist. She focused on her clients’ need for spiritual guidance and attended Shalem Institute to concentrate on Spiritual Counseling. As a response to 9/11, she and her husband sponsored the founding of the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life at Elon University.
Always remembering her roots, Mrs. Noiles and her husband were founders of Elon Academy, a non-profit college access and success program for promising high school students in Alamance County, N.C. They were also great supporters of WPI’s STEM Education Program and of the Children’s Education Foundation of Connecticut.
Mrs. Noiles is survived by her sons Daniel (m. Sheila) Noiles and Jonathan Noiles, daughters Alison Noiles and Esther Noiles as well as 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild and three of her five sisters, Betty Lawrie, Helen Hicklin and Louise Goodall.
The family will hold a private memorial. Memorial gifts may be made to the Vera Richardson Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and Elon University, Campus box 2600, Elon, N.C. 27244
