Obituary of John Duncan

John Bruce Duncan died on Friday, February 3 at Waveny Care Center. He was 93 years old. Mr. Duncan had lived in New Canaan for almost 60 years. He also maintained homes in Chatham, MA, and Sullivans Island, SC. Mr. Duncan had been in good health until sustaining injuries in a fall at his home in April of 2016. Mr. Duncan is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kitty (Catharine Gayle McChord Duncan, also of New Canaan); by eight children and stepchildren (Mary Thompson and Anne Hutcheson of New Canaan, Holt McChord of Newtown; Jim Duncan of New York, NY; Sam Duncan of Arlington, MA; Charly McChord of Skowhegan, ME; Molly Cutler of Dallas, TX; and John Duncan of Mill Valley, CA); and by 18 grandchildren. Mr. Duncan’s first wife, Leila Hammond Duncan, died in 1976. His brothers and sister, and one grandson, also predeceased him. Mr. Duncan was an international business lawyer. He worked for a series of multinational companies, including serving as Senior Vice President & General Counsel of Standard Brands. After reaching a conventional retirement age, he refreshed his expertise by getting an advanced degree from NYU Law School, and embarked on the private practice of law. He worked actively until two years ago. Mr. Duncan was a graduate of Harvard Law School. He had attended Amherst College before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served as sonar (anti-submarine warfare) officer on the U.S.S. Bristol during World War II, and received an honorary degree from Amherst in 2009. Mr. Duncan served as a director of Waveny Care Center, the Greenwich Adult Day Center and the English Speaking Union of New York; as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission in New Canaan; as a Trustee of the Food & Drug Law Institute; and as the president of the New York City Deke Club.
