Obituary of R. Vance Ward
Richard Vance Ward died unexpectedly on January 18, 2017 due to rapidly advancing cancer in his 88th year. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Vance is survived by his five children: Carolyn Ward, Jennifer Beaulieu, Philip Ward, Katherine Ward, and Karen Ashmele and thirteen grandchildren: Kristina and Karl Huber; Marc, Lea, Paul and Anne Beaulieu; Russel, Jacob, Ellen and Jillian Ward; Elise, Nicolas and Benjamin LeBrun; as well as two great grandchildren: Anna Auger and Theodore Huber-Malyi, and his brother David Ward. He was predeceased by his loving wife of almost sixty years, Elizabeth Anne Gareau and his infant son Bruce.
Vance was born on June 19, 1929 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Dr. R. Vance Ward and Isobel Mosley. He graduated from McGill in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science followed by the Graduate School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. After his graduation in 1952 Vance joined Canadian Industries Limited (C-I-L), part of the international chemical company Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) with operations throughout the world. He spent 38 years in both Canada and the United States and during his career held a number of senior management positions in both countries.
Vance was involved with many local organizations including SCORE, The Exchange Club as well as the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan, and the NYC chapter of Friends of McGill University. During his lifetime he enjoyed travel, sailing, hiking, skiing, curling, music and bridge. Vance enjoyed family vacations at his cottage in Georgian Bay and his chalet in St. Jovite, Quebec. He will be remembered for his family values, integrity, community dedication and intellect.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:30 am at St. Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien, CT 06820. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Norwalk Hospital and Paulette Robinson for their efforts and excellent care.
